Ó Pheann an Phiarsaigh

Eagrán nua de shaothar cáiliúil a bhí i mórán mála scoile in Éirinn fré chéile lá den tsaol. Chomh maith le roinnt scríbhinní leis an bPiarsach ó An Claidheamh Soluis, tá na gearrscéalta is mó a bhfuil aithne agus gean ag muintir na hÉireann orthu: 'Bríd na nAmhrán', 'Íosagán' agus, ar ndóigh, 'Eoghainín na nÉan', a bhainfeadh deoir as cloch ghlas.

I mBaile Átha Cliath a rugadh Pádraic Mac Piarais in 1879. Thosaigh sé ag cur suime sa Ghaeilge óna óige agus ghlac páirt ghníomhach i gConradh na Gaeilge ó 1896 i leith. Ceapadh ina eagarthóir ar An Claidheamh Soluis é i 1903 agus thosaigh sé ag tabhairt faoin litríocht chruthaitheach ó 1905 ar aghaidh: aistí, drámaí, gearrscéalta, filíocht.

Bhí sé thar a bheith míshásta le cúrsaí oideachais in Éirinn agus chuige seo bhunaigh sé Scoil Éanna i 1908; ainneoin deacrachtaí airgid, d'éirigh leis an scoil.
Bhí sé in Óglaigh na hÉireann ó bunaíodh iad i 1913 agus tugadh isteach san IRB é an bhliain chéanna. Nuair a tharla an t-éirí amach faoi Cháisc na bliana 1916 ba é a cuireadh i gceannas. Cuireadh Pádraic Mac Piarais chun báis ar 3 Bealtaine, 1916.

A new edition of the important work which was once to be found in almost every school bag in Ireland. As well as some of Pádraic Mac Piarais's writings from An Claidheamh Soluis, this collection also includes the most well known of Mac Piarais's short stories which have been loved by generations of Irish readers. The characters in these stories remain as compelling as ever and this new edition will introduce a new generation of readers to stories like 'Bríd na nAmhrán', 'Íosagán' and, of course, the wonderful and moving 'Eoghainín na nÉan.'

Pádraic Mac Piarais was born in Dublin in 1879. He first took an interest in the Irish language as a child and played an active role in Conradh na Gaeilge from 1896.
