This guide is based on a survey and analysis of the antiquities of Gleann Cholm Cille which was begun at the invitation of Canon James McDyer in 1970. The first edition, published in 1971, sold 20,000 copies. Fr McDyer's interest stimulated Michael Herity to continue work in the area over many years.
This edition published in 1998, celebrates the 1400th anniversary of the death of Colum-cille. It is enlarged by the fruits of work on island and other hermitages, which led Michael to study the remains on Rathlin O'Birne, Sliabh a' Liag and Beefan, and on the art of the important decorated slabs at Gleann Cholm Cille.
