Young Susan tells this really interesting and poignant story about the summer when she was eight years old, and when her brother Bruno almost drowned in the sea. She managed to swim back to the beach with him, where he became very ill. While in the hospital, Susan and her sister are often alone. This is a story of change, growth and hope told by a young girl who does not understand what is happening. There are different themes in the story; the relationship that is developing between the three children, the kindness of strangers, the support and love of a family that needs help and is lucky to find it
